Exploring Structure, Core Planning, and Parametric Façade Design
This project introduced key principles of multistory design, including structural systems, core placement, floor plate efficiency, and façade development. The brief required a mixed-use building, with the lower floors dedicated to UniSA programs and the upper floors serving as rentable office spaces.
Working collaboratively, the structure and floor plate layouts were developed in groups, while façade design was undertaken individually. The UniSA program is strategically split across two floors, creating a sheltered outdoor space beneath, inspired by the multifunctional areas at UniSA’s City West Campus. A peripheral split core was implemented to achieve a symmetrical floor plate for the office levels above, optimizing flexibility and efficiency.
The façade was designed using parametric tools in Grasshopper, providing effective sun shading for the western-facing curtain wall system while preserving interior views. At night, the façade enhances privacy for building occupants, balancing functionality and aesthetic appeal.
